Driving tips & safety
Plan routes, budgets, fuel stops, and peak-season hotels before you hit Hainan’s toll-free highways.
Before you go
Collect up-to-date info on transport, dining, lodging, and attractions so you can budget accurately and avoid tourist traps.
Speed & roads
Expressway limits are typically 100 or 120 km/h — drive carefully. Roads from Sanya toward Wuzhishan and Jianfengling are winding mountain routes in generally good condition.
Fuel & repairs
Hainan has no highway toll booths; costs are built into a fuel surcharge, so pump prices run higher than inland. East- and west-line stations are frequent, but the quieter west expressway has fewer stops — fill up early. Repair/tire shops often sit near exits (e.g. Qionghai, Wanning).
Peaks & transfers
Transfers to Wuzhizhou Island use local speedboats that can be crowded — follow safety guidance. Book Haikou/Sanya hotels early for Labour Day and National Day weeks; consider carrying camping gear for inland stays.
