Hainan Province — China’s southernmost tropical island province — blends beaches, rainforest highlands, Free Trade Port reforms, and 19 cities and counties.
Island at a glance
Hainan (abbreviation: Qiong) sits at China’s southern tip. Land area is about 35,400 km² with roughly 2 million km² of sea area — China’s second-largest island after Taiwan. The provincial capital is Haikou (the Coconut City).
On 13 April 2018, China decided to support building a Free Trade Zone across the whole island and to steadily advance a Chinese-characteristic Free Trade Port, step by step.
A tropical holiday paradise
As China’s only tropical coastal province of this kind, Hainan offers about 1,944 km of coastline, dozens of bays, peaks above 1,000 m, national forest parks, and natural hot springs — beaches and rainforest in one destination.
Nineteen cities and counties
Hainan has 19 cities and counties. Haikou features volcanic geology and Holiday Beach; Sanya is the famed tropical resort city; Sansha (2012) administers vast South China Sea waters. East, central, and west corridors each offer distinct coast, rainforest, and culture.
