Hainan’s geography spans the main island and the Xisha, Zhongsha, and Nansha island groups and surrounding seas.
Location
Bordered by the Qiongzhou Strait to the north, the Beibu Gulf to the west, and the South China Sea to the east and south, Hainan sits in the Southeast Asia economic rim.
Latitude roughly 3°58′–20°10′ N and longitude 108°37′–117°50′ E. Haikou is near 20° N; Zengmu Ansha marks the southernmost extent.
Terrain and coast
The island is higher in the centre and lower around the rim. Major ranges include Wuzhishan (1,876.1 m), Limu Ling, and Yajiada Ling. The coastline stretches about 1,944 km, with 600+ islets, reefs, and shoals beyond the main island.
